The story of The Healey Company is uniquely woven into the renaissance of Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood. This riverside community was once a teeming industrial epicenter of factories and homes. In the last decade, it has transformed from an industrial urban community into a magnet for cultural and architectural innovations.
For Michael Healey it began with a one-hundred-year-old building on Sarah Street that he converted into a luxurious pillar of what was to come. Nearly twenty years later, the neighborhood, as well as The Healey Company’s portfolio of accomplishments, has inspired new buildings and businesses that complement the Pittsburgh spirit of preservation and innovation.
Over that time, the company transitioned from real estate development projects into a general contracting and property management company. Rehabilitation and remodeling projects include Greater Pittsburgh Area, and encompass urban and suburban properties.
When Michael Healey began the company, he did it with the support from neighbors, friends, and family. Now the company thrives and strives amongst the growing number of clients that soon become friends and trusted acquaintances.

Meet The Team
The Boss
Michael Healey founded The Healey Company in 1995, dedicated to building successful real estate development and construction projects. His extensive expertise in real estate finance and construction analysis has become the company’s greatest asset. The success of the company has been built on his dedication to the goals of clients, investors and business partnerships.
Prior to establishing The Healey Company, Mr. Healey was in real estate investment baking as a portfolio manager for Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s financial services unit. Upon his departure from Westinghouse he began building his own real estate portfolio. It was then that he realized how hard it can be to find a quality general contractor. After a short time of dealing with the frustration that comes with typical construction practices, he set out to create a company that would be held accountable for the entire process. But, more than that, Michael wanted to make the process an enjoyable experience for his clients. “Your home is a special place, and creating your dream, quite literally from the ground up, should be an enjoyable process.” says Healey.
Jim Gabrielse – Senior Carpenter / Crew Lead
Jim has been with The Healey Company since 2012, bringing years of hands-on experience and leadership to the field. As a senior carpenter and trusted crew leader, he supports both fieldwork and behind-the-scenes coordination. A true jack-of-all-trades, Jim plays a key role in getting jobs across the finish line.
Chuck Karlovits – Chief Financial Officer
Chuck joined The Healey Company in 2022, bringing over three decades of experience across finance and operations. As Chief Financial Officer, Chuck ensures the financial health of the company while driving operational efficiency and supporting long-term growth.
Francesco Lafuria – Lead Mason
With The Healey Company since November 2022, Franco brings dedication and skill to every project. Specializing in masonry, his craftsmanship ensures each build is strong and built to last. With added experience in rough carpentry, his versatility and work ethic make him a trusted member of the crew.
Krista Smeal – Real Estate Portfolio Manager
Krista wears many hats as our Real Estate Portfolio Manager, handling everything from tenant relations and capital improvements to day-to-day logistics and financial oversight. Her organization and energy keep our rental operations running smoothly and always with a smile.
Griffin Humbert – Skilled Laborer
With The Healey Company since May 2024, Griffin is a skilled laborer who takes on a variety of tasks across the job site. He has been learning the fundamentals of masonry and enjoys building on those skills as he grows with the team. His strong work ethic, adaptability, and eagerness to learn make him a dependable part of every project.
Amanda Holden – Head of Design / Project Management
As both Head of Design and Project Management, Amanda brings style and structure together under one roof. With nearly 10 years on our team, she guides each project from kickoff to completion, keeping things on track and beautifully executed.
Joe Grivalsky – Drywall & Finishing Specialist
With The Healey Company since December 2005, Joe is a skilled drywall and finishing specialist known for his precision and attention to detail. Along with his expertise in drywall and painting, he brings a wide range of skills to the job, including carpentry, framing, and general construction. His versatility and decades of experience make him an essential part of every project.
Cherie O’Toole – Design Team / Project Manager
Cherie is a vital part of our Design and Project Management teams, bringing clarity and coordination to every step of the process. Since joining The Healey Company in 2022, her calm focus and eye for detail have helped keep projects running smoothly and beautifully.
Adam Follette – Senior Carpenter / Crew Lead
Since 2008, Adam has led our crews in the field with steady leadership and expert-level carpentry. His hands-on approach and attention to detail make him a reliable force on every job site. From framing to finish work, Adam helps ensure each project is completed with skill and craftmanship.
Isabel Miller – Design Team
Izzy joined The Healey Company in 2024 as the newest member of our design team, and she’s been hitting the ground running ever since. With a sharp eye for detail and a passion for learning, she has quickly become a very valuable part of our day-to-day design process.
Harry Scarrott – Skilled Laborer
Since joining The Healey Company in 2021, Harry has played a key role on our team. As a skilled laborer, he supports project leads by assisting with demolition, installations, punch list completion, and more – helping keep jobs on track and completed with care and precision.
Skylar Davis – Media & Marketing Manager
Since joining The Healey Company in 2021 as a designer, Skylar transitioned into leading marketing and media for both the construction and rental sides. Her design roots give her a sharp eye for visuals and strategy, helping shape how we present our work and connect with our audience.
Mark Nicholas – Lead Carpenter
Mark joined The Healey Company in April 2025 as one of our trusted carpenters. Known for his versatility, he brings skill and reliability to many different aspects of the job. His adaptability and dedication make him an important part of the team, ensuring each project is completed with care.
Jason Hoover Engel – Skilled Laborer
Since April 2024, Jason has been part of The Healey Company as a valued skilled laborer. Comfortable handling many different aspects of the work, he brings dedication and versatility to every job. His commitment and hard work make him an important part of our success.
Frank Perri – Carpenter / Crew Lead
With The Healey Company since December 2021, Frank is a skilled carpenter known for his versatility and strong work ethic. He takes on a wide range of tasks with precision and care, contributing to every stage of the construction process. His craftsmanship and reliability make him a valued member of the team.
Design – Build Process
Our Philosophy:
Design–build is a specific type of project delivery system in which the design and construction services are contracted by one single entity.
As opposed to design – bid – build, where there are multiple entities responsible for multiple parts of the building process, Design–Build relies on one accountability. Our method successfully minimizes risks for the project owner and reduces the delivery schedule by overlapping the design phase and construction phase of a project. It places accountability with The Healey Company from inspection to years after completion.
Design-Build carries the clearest contractual solution for clients because the Healey Company is responsible for every piece of the work on the project, regardless of the nature. “Not only is my Company accountable, but I am personally involved in every project” Michael says.
We have everything it takes to complete your project. Know exactly what you want? That’s great, we can get started right away. Have a few rough ideas? Our designers will meet with you, and soon you’ll realize their full potential. Does your project include structural work or an addition? We’ll work with our structural engineer or bring our Architect on board. Unsure what your project will entail? We work with you, around your schedule to create a detailed plan of action.

Our Process
1. Initial Visit
We begin with an on-site visit to understand goals, scope, and existing conditions.
2. Feasibility & Preliminary Proposals
For applicable projects, a ballpark feasibility proposal is prepared. Once signed, the project moves into conceptual design and planning.
3. Design Development
Our designers, architects and structural professionals work closely with the client to review schematic options, layouts, and design direction.
4. Proposal Writing and Estimation
Our team gathers pricing from trusted contractors/subcontractors and prepares a detailed scope outlining all aspects of the work.
5. Value Engineering & Contract Execution
Initial proposals are presented. If necessary, value engineering takes place to refine the scope.
6. Construction & Project Management
One team oversees construction, coordination, and quality control.
7. Completion & Follow-Through
Final details and closeout ensure the project is completed with care.
